The Volvo Golf Champions will be held January 27th through January 30th at the Royal Golf Club in the Kingdom of Bahrain, with a prize purse of €1,700,000. This is the first year of the tournament and the field will be made up of 126 past European Tour Champions, including players who have made history on the tour in the past few years.

The tournament will now be the beginning of what is called the 'Desert Swing' on the European Tournament and the Royal Golf Club Mongomerie Course will be the venue, named after and designed by Ryder Cup Captain from 2010 Colin Montgomerie.

Many of the participants have already arrived in Bahrain and some were seen yesterday at the club, taking advantage of the first official day of practice along the 18-hole Montgomerie-designed championship course which will be the centre of attention in the world of golf this week.

Among those already spotted on the fairways were Harrington, Hamilton, Simon Dyson and Nick Dougherty of England, and Paul Lawrie of Scotland.

Today will be another official practice day, while Harrington and Garcia are scheduled to meet with members of the Press, as are Volvo's golf event management president and chief executive Per Ericsson and other high-ranking officials.

Also set to compete in the Volvo Golf Champions is national team golfer Nasser Yacoob, who will be making history as the first-ever Bahraini to take part in a European Tour event.

Yacoob secured his entry by winning the Bahrain Golf Association Team Qualifier, and he will be looking to make his countrymen proud as he flies the kingdom's red and white on home soil.

On Saturday, the Volvo World Golf Challenge finalists will play in the tournament, with one amateur playing alongside two professionals in each group.

The professionals will continue to play in the individual strokeplay format, while the amateurs will play in a team competition with both professionals in their group forming their team. The best two scores of the three team members on each hole will count towards their team total.

On Sunday, only the professionals will be out for the final round.

The Volvo Golf Champions is taking place with the full support of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), under the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Chairman of the EDB.

The tournament has original and specifically devised qualification criteria, ensuring a field rich in quality, consisting only of past winners of European Tour Tournaments.

Tomorrow, there will be a Pro-Am event, while Casey, Poulter and Montgomerie are all scheduled to speak with the Press.

The field this year is an impressive one including Todd Hamilton, Michael Campbell, Robert Karlsson, Colin Montgomerie, Andrew Marshall and Anders Hansen, as well as Paul Casey, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Stephen Dodd, David Howell, Ian Poulter and Christian Cevaer as well as David Horsey, Gregory Bourdy and Michael Jonzon.
