Sony Open in Hawaii

Club: Waialae CC

Location: Honolulu, Hawaii

Date: Jan 13-16, 2011

2011 PGA Golf Betting Online: The Sony Open in Hawaii, entering its 13th year with Sony as title sponsor, is one of the leading charity sporting events in the state of Hawaii, having raised $10 million since 1999. All net proceeds from the event benefit Friends of Hawaii Charities, an organization dedicated to providing funds to qualifying not-for-profit endeavors in support of women, children and elderly in need.

Sony Corporation (Sony) and the PGA TOUR announced that they will present live 3-D broadcasts of the 2011 Sony Open to be held at the Waialae Country Club in Oahu, Hawaii. Having conducted successful 3-D testing at multiple events this year, both parties recently concluded an agreement to present the tournament in live 3-D. The test locations included the 2010 Sony Open in Hawaii.

The 3-D coverage will be produced and distributed to U.S. households by the Golf Channel and Comcast. Of the 83 million households across the U.S., viewers who have 3-D compatible TV sets such as Sony's 3-D "BRAVIA" will be able to enjoy the closing stages of the tournament in immersive live 3-D. 3-D coverage will also be made available to PGA TOUR broadcast partners around the world that have 3-D capability.

Waialae Country Club has been the venue since 1965 and although not very long in distance, the tricky trade winds and Bermuda greens make Waialae a difficult test each year. The course nestles between the majestic Koolau mountain range on the north and blue Pacific Ocean on the south. The par-70 layout requires accuracy off the tee and precise approach shots. The tournament may easily come down to the finishing hole, a reachable par-five that generally plays down wind – a two-shot swing is a possibility. You can always expect a great finish at Waialae.

Past Champions Zach Johnson, Ernie Els, KJ Choi, Vijay Singh, and David Toms are all scheduled to play. They will be joined by head-liners Robert Allenby, Steve Stricker and long-hitting Bubba Watson. It should be a great week to sit back and watch golf – especially if you live in a place that is cold.

Check back the second week of January and bet golf odds and golf matchups for the Sony Open. Bookmaker.com will have all the odds and matchups available for you to bet.

LOOKING TO BET ON THIS WEEK’S 2011 Sony Open? CHECK OUT BETUS.com’s PGA Tour Betting Odds Today!!!!!

The Hyundai Tournament of Champions got us warmed up and we almost struck gold with Graeme McDowell, who sizzled on Sunday and finished just out of the playoff. Let’s try again at the Sony Open, the first full-field event of 2011.

Accuracy and ball-striking will be important at Waialae this week, as the winds will be a-gustin’, the fairways were the Tour’s toughest to hit last year and the greens will be wet.

THIS WEEK’S PGA BETTING

Date: Thursday Jan 13 – Sunday Jan 16, 2011
Event: Sony Open in Hawaii
Course: Waialae CC, Honolulu, Hawaii
Purse: $5.5 million
Defending Champ: Ryan Palmer
Winning Share: $990,000
FedEX Cup Points Up For Grabs: 500

THE ELITE

Steve Stricker
Sony Open odds: +815

Stricker is certainly hot enough, having shared the lead last week after 54 holes. He also has three top-four finishes in his last four tries at Waialae. His efficient, accurate approach and putting skills make him perfectly suited to the course.

Jim Furyk
Sony Open odds: +915

Last year’s FedEx Cup winner opened 2011 strongly with a ninth-place finish last week. Furyk won the Sony Open in 1996 and has five top-10 finishes. There’s really no strike against him here unless you worry that it’s only downhill after last season.

THE CONTENDERS

Ernie Els
Sony Open odds: +1015

Els makes for a sneakier play than the top two names on this list. Not only does he offer slightly better sportsbook value, the Big Easy has won the Sony Open twice (2003, 2004) and has five top-10 finishes there. Els was 17th last week at the Hyundai but won his previous tournament. Is he about to cool off or about to start one of his runs?

Matt Kuchar
Sony Open odds: +1615

Kuchar fits the bill of Waialae contender because of his superb ball striking. He was fantastic in 2010 and picked up where he left off last week, posting three of four rounds in the 60s en route to an 18-under, sixth-place finish. However, he’s missed two straight cuts at the Sony Open. What if it’s just not his track?

SOLID PICKS

Charles Howell III
Sony Open odds: +2050

He’s perhaps the most “due” of anyone in the field this week. Howell has five top-five finishes at the Stony and is fifth all-time in money won there. He has to win one eventually, right?

Robert Allenby
Sony Open odds: +2550

He has three top-10 finishes in his last five tries at Waialae and finished second last year. Also, Allenby stayed busy during the silly season. Does that mean he’ll be in midseason form? Or will he be tired?sportsbook golf 250x250 mybanner 2011 PGA Sony Open of Hawaii Preview/Picks

Zach Johnson
Sony Open odds: +3050

Johnson pinpoint accuracy makes him someone to consider at the Sony. He won the event in 2009 and was 12th last year. However, his 23rd-place finish at the Hyundai last week was ho-hum and he’s battling a toe injury.

THE SLEEPER

Camilo Villegas
Sony Open odds: +4050

Villegas hasn’t played the Sony Open since 2006 but he’s no stranger to playing well early in seasons. Also, he may come out extra focused after a rule violation left him disqualified last week.

THE PICK

Steve Stricker will be a no-brainer to some; I definitely expect nothing less than a top-10 effort from him. You can make a decent case for the on-the-cusp Howell as well. But my gut tells me it’s Els’ week. He has a great track record at the Sony and his victory two events ago shows he’s already polished his swing early in the season.

Sony Open pick: Ernie Els +1015

Each year over a thousand students and spectators gather at this free, fun-filled community event to watch the exciting and entertaining competition and the spectacular entrance made by a select team of skydivers from Skydive Hawaii that "drop" into the event on the 18th green after jumping from a plane 6,500 feet above Diamond Head. Kamehameha Schools Band and Choir, Hula Preservation Society and cultural speaker Manu Boyd are scheduled to perform and appear at the event too.

The junior golfers are selected based on points earned throughout the year from Hawaii State Junior Golf Association (HSJGA) events that are calculated and used to determine Player of the Year and Special Event Exemption Selection. Mary Bea Porter King, president for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association said, "Junior golfers on the top of the points list are given first priority to participate in the King Auto Group Pro-Junior Skills Challenge as their ‘reward' for playing so well throughout the year."

Sixteen-year-old Seabury Hall junior Alexander Chiarella shot an impressive 64 at the HSJGA Optimist Qualifer at Turtle Bay in 2010. He also won the 15-18-year-old HSJGA King Auto Group State Championship, the 15-18-year-old HSJGA Kaanapali Match Play Championship, the 15-18-year-old HSJGA Tournament of Championship and was named the 15-18-year-old HSJGA Player of the Year. His favorite school subject is math, but Chiarella also enjoys sports and going to the beach.

Twelve-year old Allisen Corpuz attends 7th grade at Punahou School. In her young life, she has already made two hole in one shots – the first at Hole 7 at Lomas Santa Fe in 2008 and the other at Makaha West's Hole 16 in 2010. She won an AJGA Open event at Rock Island, Illinois in 2010 and shot a par 71 at the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities, Rock Island Arsenal Golf Course in June 2010. Her favorite school subject is science.

Seventeen-year-old Cyd Okino attends Punahou School. She has already made four hole in one shots all before graduating from high school next spring and has received a full college scholarship at the University of Washington. She shot a bogey free 67 in the afternoon round of the 36-hole in the U.S. Women's Open Sectional Qualifer at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course (at 6,322 yards) in June 2008 for the Medalist win at 142 (2-under overall). Besides golf, Okino loves to sing and her favorite school subject is art. Okino also enjoys volunteering during her spare time with the Junior Optimist Club and serving food at the Next Step homeless shelter.

Seventeen-year-old Aiea High School senior Ryan Kuroiwa shot a 71-70 at the King Auto State Championship at Hokulia in July 2010. He has made an impressive three hole in one shots in his young golfing career. His favorite school subject is math. After graduation next year, Kuroiwa plans to attend the University of Hawaii on a golf scholarship. Kuroiwa also enjoys learning Japanese and collecting Oakley sunglasses.

Sixteen-year-old Scotty Yamashita attends Kamehameha Schools Kapalama campus as a junior and finished at an impressive 3rd place at the Turtle Bay Amateur this year. He scored 4 under and was ranked second place at the Optimist qualifier at Turtle Bay Resort in June 2010; finished fifth place, 1 over at the Barbers Point Invitational, Barbers Point Golf Course in July 2010 and ended in third place, 1 under in the Turtle Bay Amateur, Turtle Bay Resort in October 2010. His favorite school subject is Spanish, but he also loves a game of pick-up basketball.

"The Pro-Junior Challenge generates enthusiasm among Hawaii junior golfers. It serves as an incentive for them to play in our state tournaments where they gain qualifying points that enable them to play with the pros at Waialae," said Charlie King of King Auto Group, title sponsor of the event. "It's the experience of a lifetime for them!"

Each junior – pro team will compete in a four skills challenge: a 128-yard Miracle Shot sponsored by Monarch Insurance; Bunker Shot sponsored by Kraft Foods in Hawaii; a Chip Shot; and the final Challenge Putt sponsored by King Auto Group
