The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the annual open golf tournament of the United States. It is the second of the four major championships in golf and is on the official schedule of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. It is staged by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in mid-June, scheduled so that, if there are no weather delays, the final round is played on the third Sunday, which is Father’s Day.
Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus hold the record for the most U.S. Open victories, with four victories each. Hale Irwin is the oldest winner of the U.S. Open: The youngest winner of the U.S. Open is John McDermott who was 19 years 315 days old when he won in 1911. Jack Nicklaus, Lee Janzen, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk hold the record for the lowest score over 72 holes, which is 272. Tiger Woods holds the distinction of being the most strokes under par for 72 holes, he was 12 strokes under par when he won in 2000.

Fast greens, lots of bunkers and the world beating golfers, the US Open is finally here. The second of the majors tees off at The Blue Course, Congressional Country Club on Thursday 16th June 2011, with Ulsterman Greame McDowell the current champion. The US Open is seen by a lot of people to be the most exciting golf event of the year, with the USPGA setting the worlds best golfers a serious challenge. From the 402 yard Par 4 first to the 523 yard Par 4 last all this years US Open competitors are sure to get no easy holes! The course at Congressional Country Club will be set up at 7,250 yards and a total of par 70, even the maths says this is going to be tough. I don't think we'll be seeing any record under par scores this year.
This years tournament would have been seen as yet another comeback for Tiger Woods, but nope, not this time. Without Tiger Woods taking part in the US Open it has led some to question where the appeal is going to be? They must be forgetting that the all the top players in the world are still going to be there and all challenging for the title. There is more to golf than Tiger Woods!
