The Masters captures the attention of even those marginal golf fans that follow the sport sporadically. Some of the most popular events that surround The Masters are the wagering pools that often accompany golf’s Super Bowl in April. To lend a helping hand, WBG looks at 7 PGA Tour players that are poised to slip on the Green Jacket in 2011.
1) Matt Kuchar – After an impressive rebound year in 2010, Kuchar is once again putting together a solid season in 2011. In the seven events he has played in Kuchar has 5 top 10 finishes. Pressure isn’t an issue either as he showed with his 3rd place finish at the WGC Accenture Match Play championship against the best players in the world. Kuchar may not be the longest hitter in golf but the fact that he hits almost 67% of the fairways he sees and has a scoring average that ranks among the best in the world makes him a solid candidate to win his first major.
2) Dustin Johnson – Aside from some mental errors (see the 2010 PGA Championship and Pebble Beach in 2011), Johnson has the game to win multiple majors. With 2nd and 3rd place finishes so far this year, Johnson knows his way around a leaderboard. Monstrous off the tee, Johnson should be able to eat up the par-5s at Augusta and keep himself in contention. As long as his caddie doesn’t screw up his tee times or he is able to identify the hazards, Johnson should be in the mix come Sunday at the Masters.
3) Martin Kaymer – On February 27, 2011, the German-born Kaymer became the number one player in the world. With a major already under his belt, the 2010 PGA Championship, Kaymer knows what it takes to beat the best. With a win at the Abu Dhabi HBSC Golf Championship, Kaymer’s consistent tee to green dissection of the golf courses he plays sets him up well for a run at the Masters.
4) Mark Wilson – The Fed Ex Cup leader has the game for Augusta. With two wins on tour already this year, Wilson knows how to close it out. Deadly accurate and among the Tour leaders in scrambling, Wilson can manage his way around Augusta and possibly into the winners circle come Sunday.
5) Lee Westwood – The ‘Tiger Slayer’ took the world’s number one ranking from a spiralling Tiger Woods before handing that title over to Kaymer. A lacklustre 2011 campaign, combined with a limited playing schedule, leaves us wondering if Westwood will be ready to battle the big boys at the Masters. But one can’t help remember the display of shot-making and composure that the Englishman has demonstrated during his last two appearances. Don’t count him out.
6) Phil Mickelson – It seems golf’s old guard (Mickelson, Woods, Els, etc.) have disappeared off golf’s radar. Mickelson has battled injuries of late and his game is inconsistent at best. Barely hitting 50% of the fairways has cost Mickelson but that comes as no surprise. The intangible in picking Mickelson this year is simple. He loves this tournament, is a multiple winner, and plays the risk-reward game like no other.
7) Tiger Woods – Who would have ever thought that Woods’ would be considered a wildcard in a tournament he has dominated for years. But with the state of his game right now, that’s exactly where Woods sits. The under dog. But Tiger’s confidence in the new swing changes that he and new coach Sean Foley have developed is growing. He’s becoming more comfortable around the greens and if golf’s most clutch putter can find that stroke on the greens, it could be major number 15 for Woods. The problem, however, is finding the fairway. Woods is only hitting 44% of his fairways and at Augusta, that spells doom. But are we really ready to throw in the towel on Tiger Woods just yet?
