Tiger Woods won't be playing in the U.S Open this year due to lingering left leg injuries. I'm not a Woods fan, but I don't want to see him struggling with his health. At 35 he should be right in the prime of his golfing career, and it's a shame he can't compete right now.

Donald is the world's number one player, and no one has played better in 2011. How about 8 straight top 10 finishes on the PGA tour including a win at Accenture Match Play Championship? He also won the European Tour's BMW PGA Championship in May. Donald does not having a stellar record at the U.S Open.

He is without a top 10 career finish, but he's playing too well not to be considered this year's favorite. He is an accurate driver of the ball and that always helps at a U.S Open.

He's coming off a recent win at the Memorial.

Who doesn't like someone nicknamed the Tank? Choi doesn't have a good record at the U.S Open, but he does have a win at the AT&T National in 2007. That's the PGA tour event held at Congressional, so he should feel good on this course. He won the biggest title of his career at the Player's Championship in May. He's a little like Mickelson in that his driving will be the key to whether he contends or not.

9) Dustin Johnson

I look at Dustin Johnson the same way I look at Rory Mcilory. Those are two young players with loads and loads of raw talent, but have the scar tissue of throwing away majors in the 4th round. Johnson was cruising at the U.S Open at Pebble Beach last year and entered round 4 with a 3 stroke lead only to shoot an 82 and finish T8. He hits it a mile and if he drives it straight, he’ll have a huge advantage over a large portion of the field.

10) Ernie Els

Apparently picking a South African to win a major in recent years is a pretty good bet. I'm going with South African Ernie Els as a darkhorse candidate here. The 2-time U.S Open Champion will be the only player in the field with a U.S Open win (1997) at Congressional and just last year finished 3rd in the U.S Open. Outside of Woods, Els has been the best U.S Open golfer the past 2 decades.

The Masters is now the only major Woods has played every year since turning pro. He was recovering from knee surgery in 2008 and did not play the British Open and PGA Championship.

“It’s been a frustrating and difficult year, but I’m committed to my longterm health,” Woods said. “I want to thank the fans for their encouragement and support. I am truly grateful and will be back playing when I can.”

The question is when he returns.

Woods is recovering from injuries to his left knee ligaments and left Achilles, and his Achilles is believed to be giving him more trouble.

“My man is hurting,” Arjun Atwal, a close friend and frequent practice partner, said last week at the Memorial. “He’s in a boot, he’s on crutches. Not doing good.”

The most recent of four surgeries on Woods’ left knee came a week after the 2008 U.S. Open, which Woods won in a playoff for his 14th major. He had reconstructive surgery and was out for eight months, then returned and won seven times the following year before his personal life imploded on Thanksgiving night in 2009.

Woods was tied for the lead at the turn in the final round of the Masters this year and wound up in a tie for fourth. But he said he hurt his knee and Achilles hitting from an awkward stance in the pine straw on the 17th hole of the third round at Augusta National, and he was limping toward the finish on Sunday. He described it as a “minor injury” in April.

Woods sat out the US Open Championship, then tried to play in The Players Championship, only to withdraw at 6-over par after nine holes because of what he called a chain reaction of pain in his knee, Achilles and eventually his calf.

With no dominant force in world golf and the rankings seemingly changing every couple of weeks, this year’s US Open promises to be one of the most competitive tournaments in years. European Tour players currently hold all of the major golf crowns and so can the American challenge be halted again?
The favourites
This year’s US Open will be held at the Congressional Country Club for the first time since 1997. Ernie Els was the victor on that occasion and the South African can be backed at 66/1 to win his first major since 2002.
Phil Mickelson is traditionally a decent performer in the bigger events. Whilst the left hander is in good form, it’s worth remembering that Mickelson hasn’t won a major on a course other than the Augusta National since 2005 and so the 14/1 on offer doesn’t look amazing value.

Last year's winner Graeme McDowell can be backed at 33/1
Tiger Woods won the 2009 AT&T National at the Congressional and so does have a victory under his name at this course. The three times US Open champion has a great record in this tournament, but with concerns over his injured knee and erratic form there aren’t likely to be many takers even at 16/1.
The form player in world golf right now is Luke Donald with top ten finishes in an incredible twelve of his last thirteen tournaments. Donald has proved that he can compete with the very best on the PGA Tour week in, week out and I really expect the talented Englishman to go close at 12/1.
World number one Lee Westwood can be backed at 12/1 to win his first major whilst reigning US PGA champion Martin Kaymer is available at 25/1. Last year’s US Open champion Graeme McDowell is 33/1 to retain his title.

Charitable organization in the greater Hickory area now have a new way to lift money through the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors, it was announced today. The PGA Champions Tour event is set for June 6-12, 2011 at Rock Barn Golf & Spa. As part of the Together Anything’s possible charity challenge, Hickory area charities can sell tickets and ticket packages for the ninth annual Greater Hickory Classic with 100 percent of the ticket proceeds going in a straight line to the charity that sold them. In its eight-year history, the Greater Hickory Classic has donated more than $1 Million to Hickory-area charities including nearly $20,000 donated to charities just through ticket sales last year. Any registered 501(c) 3 charitable organization is eligible to join the 2011 charity challenge to raise money through the sale of Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn tickets. “We are proud of the funds the Greater Hickory Classic has raised for our local charities,” executive tournament director Jim Correll said. “Through the ‘Together anything’s Possible’ charity challenge, we are offering organizations a way to increase donations despite an economy that continues to have its challenges. With our new June tournament date, we could very well have record-setting crowds. Tens of thousands of people will be buying tournament tickets, and by purchasing them through one of our charities, our fans can support the tournament and their favorite charity at the same time. That’s a win for everyone.”

Sarà inoltre offerto loro un cestino per il pranzo e dei capi di abbigliamento prodotti per l’occasione dall’azienda COLMAR. Per chi necessita di alloggio, vi sono una serie di convenzioni con alcuni alberghi della zona.
Come per le passate edizioni saranno reclutati anche una ventina di volontari per le funzioni di Spotter e Microfonisti che collaboreranno con la troupe televisiva dell’European Tour che riprenderà l’evento. Per queste funzioni è necessaria la disponibilità per tutte e 4 le giornate di gara e l’ottima conoscenza della lingua inglese.

In considerazione delle numerose richieste pervenute per l’edizione 2010, si informa che, come criterio di selezione dei volontari, oltre alla conoscenza del gioco del golf e delle sue regole, sarà data preferenza a chi ha offerto la disponibilità per le 4 giornate di gara.

Defending the title will be Swede Frederik Andersson-Hed, who claimed his first European Tour title on his 245th attempt.Andersson Hed took a commanding six stroke advantage into the final round in Turin after a brilliant third round nine under par 63, but found himself pegged back by Horsey. Horsey moved into a share of the lead with his sixth birdie of the day on the 13th, but promptly dropped a shot at the next and also bogeyed the 18th after a ten minute wait on the tee. That gave Andersson Hed some much-needed breathing room and he was able to par the last two holes to complete a round of 73 for and winning total of 16 under par.The Italian Open has been part of the European Tour schedule since the tour's debut season in 1972. But the tournament goes back much farther, first played in 1925. BMW has been the title sponsor since the 2009 tourney. Past winners include Tony Jacklin, Mark James, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Sam Torrance, Greg Norman, Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell.In 2010 it had a prize fund of $1.3 million, which was one of the smaller purses among the European Tour events played in Europe itself. So with the small purse and being played one week before the U.S. Open, most top ranked players will probably skip this event, including some of Italy's best. The Molinari brothers and teen sensation Matteo Manassero will all likely miss this year's BMW Italian Open in order to rest and prepare for the second Major championship of the year.
