World number one Tiger Woods has lived up to the massive expectations of thousands of fans at Kingston Heath, with an opening round of 66 at the JBWere Australian Masters.

However, a bogey at his final hole has cost him the outright lead, as he's been joined at six-under in the clubhouse by South African Branden Grace and Aussie James Nitties.

The thousands of people that followed Woods throughout the day, however, were hardly disappointed as the American champ put on a scintillating display that included a run of four birdies in five holes.

His only blemish, on the ninth hole, came after he hooked his tee shot into trees and scrambled to make bogey.

"It was a pretty good day. I hit the ball pretty decent. (I had) good speed on the greens," Woods said after his round.

"(I) took advantage of the par fives. Made one up-and-down for birdie at six; other than that I didn't really make a lot of putts today."

Grace himself missed the opportunity to take the outright clubhouse lead when he bogied the 17th hole. However, he thrilled his much smaller gallery with a terrific run of birdies, including four-in-a-row between holes six to nine.

Nitties, the 27-year-old who's now making a name for himself on the US PGA Tour, had a blemish-free round that featured four birdies and an eagle.

Australian Cameron Percy - who did not even get a start in yesterday's pro-am despite having already earned his US PGA Tour card for 2010 - is in the clubhouse a further shot back at five-under, tied with fellow Aussie Peter Nolan and New Zealander Doug Holloway.

The 10th fairway, where Woods today began his round, was packed with spectators keen to get a glimpse of Tiger in his first Australian tournament appearance in more than 10 years.

Thousands of people followed Woods' playing group - which also included defending champion Rod Pampling (one-under) and veteran Aussie Craig Parry (two-under) - throughout the morning.

On the 13th hole, spectators were forced to climb into the low branches of trees in a bid to get a better view of Woods as he made his way up the fairway.

When Woods moved to the ninth in his final hole of the day, spectators were more than five-deep at the green.

Officials at all tees during the day were quick to remind spectators to put down their phones and cameras as players prepared to take their shots.

For his part, Woods had his game face on since stepping out onto practise fairway well before 7am.

Before the sun had risen above the trees, and with a more than a thousand people watching on, Woods peppered the 250 metre sign with his driver. He worked his way down through his clubs before hundreds followed him to the practise green.

When he was introduced moments before teeing off, the crowd clapped loudly but was otherwise restrained. And so began the race among fans to get as close as possible to Tiger as he played a shot during his first round in Australia in a decade.
