Played during the first week of December, a time of the year when both the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and the European Tour’s Race to Dubai have been concluded, the marquee names in professional golf consider the Nedbank Golf Challenge to be a year-end highlight, and despite the dates clashing with the Chevron World Challenge, the 30th Nedbank Golf Challenge is still guaranteed to attract the biggest names in the game.


There may be only 12 players in the field, but this year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge has attracted an elite field of golf professionals which includes the current number one golfer in the world Lee Westwood. The Englishman is joined in the Nedbank Golf Challenge by fellow countrymen Justin Rose and Ross Fisher as well as three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, the current British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and 2010 European Ryder Cup heroes Edoardo Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Also include in the line-up is Australian Robert Allenby, Danish golfer Anders Hansen and the South African trio of Tim Clark, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge is an annual men's professional golf tournament played at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, North West province, South Africa. It is not an official money event for any of the major tours, and like many high profile unofficial tournaments in professional golf it takes place between the conclusion of the PGA Tour in early November, and Christmas. It usually attracts many of the world's highest ranked players.

The tournament is a twelve man invitational stroke play event, with the field being made up of defending champion, the Sunshine Tour order of merit winner, the four major winners and then completed with the top players in the Official World Golf Rankings following the U.S. PGA Championship. In 2006, the tournament carried world ranking points for the first time since 1999.[1]

When it was conceptualised by Gary Player and founded by Sol Kerzner in 1981, the tournament was known as The Million Dollar Challenge because of its US$1 million prize fund, with the winner's share being $500,000. In 1987 the event was played on a "winner takes all" basis, with the winner claiming the whole of the million dollar purse. This was designed to overcome any qualms the world's top golfers might have about competing in South Africa during the apartheid era, and it was successful in doing this in many cases. In 1988 the winner's prize was again $1 million, but additional prizes were introduced.

From 2000 to 2002 the first prize was increased to $2 million, but the following year the winner's share of the total prize fund was reduced from more than half to around 30%. The standard winner's share on the PGA Tour is 18% and on the European Tour it is 16.67%. In 2006 the winner received $1.2 million out of a total purse of $4.385 million, so the prize distribution is now not far from the normal pattern for a professional tournament, once allowance is made for the small size of the field. That $2 million first prize remains the largest in professional golf.

As has been the case for the past five years, in December the men’s Australian Open will be played in Sydney, returning for the first time in almost two decades to The Lakes Golf Club near the city’s airport. The Lakes has hosted countless prominent championships in its history, including three previous Australian Open’s, but none have been played on a golf course quite like this one.

When the founding members of The Lakes established the club in 1928, it was on the scrubby, sandy dunes near Kingsford, and a piece of land famously set within the Botany Water Reserve. The large lake that dominates the back nine here was part of the original layout designed by Eric Apperly and Tom Howard. Little of their course survived the 1960s, however, when the construction of Southern Cross Drive split the property in two and forced a complete redesign by American architect Robert von Hagge. Von Hagge’s course opened in 1970 and was well received, despite being completely different in nature to the earlier version. It successfully hosted the Open in 1980 and again in 1992. Following the ’92 Open, won by Steve Elkington, the golf course curiously lost its way, quickly deteriorating as a combination of architectural neglect and internal mismanagement started to take its toll.
